October 3, 2016

Mrs. Chatterbox and I are fortunate to have new friends who have offered us their condo in Puerto Vallarta, so we’re off to Mexico to enjoy sunshine, eat fabulous food and shut out presidential politics for a while. Our son CJ will be joining us with his lady friend, who Mrs. C. and I like very much.

In the meantime, I’m thinking about having a Give-A-Way when I return. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that I have a lot of paintings. Churchill once quipped that his own canvases were, “—too good to give away, not good enough to sell.” Well, Churchill did give away some of his paintings, and now, if there is enough interest, I’m thinking about raffling one of my framed paintings, and of course this prize would include framing and shipping.

I’ve gone through stacks of canvases and have selected this one because I think it might appeal to a broad number of people. As a disclaimer, this oil on canvas picture is a copy of Hydrangeas, a 1901 painting by little-known British artist Philip Wilson Steer. I painted it as a demonstration in a class I taught on “blocking in” and “fleshing out” a painting.

My goal for this Give-A-Way would be to increase my readership. I’ve been close to three hundred followers on my Google Friend widget, but every time I get close to three hundred followers Google removes a few dozen. I don’t know if these folks are no longer followers or if Google is just screwing with me.

I’m open to suggestions as to how to do this. Maybe my readers could let me know if they’re interested in participating, and direct their followers to Chubby Chatterbox where they can join and leave a comment identifying the blogger directing them to my site. I want my regular followers to also have a chance to win, and their name could go into a hopper each time they guide someone to my blog. This way there would be multiple chances to win. Some of you have had successful Give-A-Ways and I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have on this. If there’s enough interest, I’ll decide how this will work when I return from Mexico. Should this come about, I’d like to be able to ship the painting in time for Christmas.

I hope everyone has a terrific week, and I’ll see you soon.

That's a gorgeous painting and very generous of you. I suggest that you type GIVEAWAY and tag giveaway as the first word in your post. Lots of people scan blogs for giveaways. If you're on Twitter or FB, do the same. Google is messing with us all. Whenever I get close to a big number, they drop me down a few dozen followers. But I'm confident this will put you over your goal. Have a wonderful adventure in Mexico.

I like offering the occasional giveaway. I have used Rafflecopter, which allows entrants to earn more chances by following your blog, tweeting about your blog/giveaway, blogging about your giveaway, etc. Rafflecopter chooses the winner(s). I also like to offer two or three prizes because some people will enter to win a certain prize, if not the painting then perhaps an Amazon gift card. I've also used "leave a comment to enter" and then I put all the names of the people who comment in a bowl and pull out the winner. I hope you have a great vacation. You and Mrs. C. are quite the travelers. Love, Janie

Enjoy your vacation! :-) Greetings from London.

Have a good time in Mexico. I think everyone's followers have dropped through google. I'm not sure why. As for giveaways, I think one done through comments and then selected via random.org worked best for me. However, I know there are probably better ways. I wanted to keep things simple.

Going on vacation AND shutting out presidential politics? Oh, you lucky duck, you!

Nice - but "little-known British artist Philip Wilson Steer"??? He may little-known to you, but he regularly makes over $50,000 at auction, and in 2015 a 29 x 25 inches scene of yachts in a harbour made nearly ten times that - $491,000. People do not pay half a million dollars for little-known artists, and in the art world Steer is very well-known indeed and much admired!!
