5th Blogiversary

August 3, 2016

Today is my 800th post and marks five years since my first Chubby Chatterbox post. Sometimes it seems like I started blogging yesterday, yet at other times it seems much longer. Back in 2011, I felt it would be quite an achievement if I could keep it going for five years, all the while wondering if my ideas would dry up, if I’d run out of things to write about. Many of you have been supporters since the beginning, and your comments and encouragement have meant a great deal, especially the love and support Mrs. C. and I received when our son CJ was struck down with a brain aneurysm. I’m happy to report he’s made a complete recovery.

Many of you have been blogging longer than five years and I’m amazed at the knowledge and inventiveness in many of your blogs. Over the years many of the sites I’ve enjoyed have gone silent as life intervenes or people run out of things to say. I doubt I’ll ever run out of words, at least I haven’t over the past sixty-four years.

I intend to continue writing, posting and building relationships with my blogging friends, of which I seem to have many in Russia. This past week I’ve received thousands of hits from Russia. I find it hard to believe I have more followers there than I do in America, so maybe the Kremlin thinks America’s launch codes are hidden in my ramblings. Or maybe they’re complying with Trump’s request to find Hillary’s e-mails and suspect I’m hiding them. Who knows. But if anyone from Russia is actually reading this, please send vodka and caviar!

A Few Bits and Pieces

Many of you have inquired after my mother, and I’m pleased to say that at ninety-one she’s doing well. Her energy is waning, but she’s as feisty and opinionated as ever. Last week she made a ruckus when her rent was raised four dollars. In spite of the fact that she’ll probably outlive me, we nearly came to blows last week when I made what I thought was a funny response to her query about what I intended to do with her money when she’s gone. Knowing how she feels about our current president, and secure in the knowledge that I don’t really need her money, I quipped, “Well, Obama’s presidential library isn’t going to build itself!” The silence on her end of the phone suggested I might have gone too far. I’d better change my ways or she’ll leave her money to the RNC.

******************

Mrs. Chatterbox and I have concluded that I’m retired. Most people have an accurate idea of when they’re going to retire and acknowledge the moment when it arrives. Over the past few years I’ve been earning money through royalties from my illustration CD, but I haven’t accepted new assignments for some time, although I continue to paint for pleasure. Mrs. C. will be retiring next year. She’s been working since she was a teenager and is looking forward to a more relaxed lifestyle. She talks about getting a dog and I have a feeling it won’t be long before we’re once more shopping on the pet aisle at our grocery store.

*********************

CJ has a lovely new lady in his life and we couldn’t be happier for him. Previously, I’ve told him I won’t ask questions but I need a six month warning to lose a few pounds so I can squeeze into a tuxedo. Since losing weight I won’t be needing that warning.

**********************

This is starting to read like an obnoxious Christmas letter, so I’ll conclude. I hope you’ll continue to visit and support Chubby Chatterbox.

Take care.

Your response to your mother is quite funny. Congratulations on five years and that many posts. I'm coming up on seven years and it is sad to see how many blogs have gone silent over the years.

Happy Blogiversary! Amazing how time flies, huh?
By: Al Penwasser on August 3, 2016
Congrats!!! 800 posts...that is impressive. I, too have more followers in Russia than the US. What is that about. I am thankful that anyone reads my stuff but I wouldn't be sad if the US were as amused by me as the Russians are. Happy to hear your mother is well. Surely she is stressed with the Republican choice. Tell me she can't be loving Trump. Speaking of your weight loss...how is it going? Are you where you want to be? That is great that CJ has found someone. Hope all goes well for him.

Nothing obnoxious about it! So much happy news and congratulations on the blogiversary! Although I must admit I'm a bit concerned about continuing OUR connection given your Russian connection. I'll check with the DNC and find out if you've been mentioned. Better yet, I'll just ask that assh@t Trump. Never mind. He wouldn't recognize the truth if it hit him in the face. Sorry!!! Happy you're here. Happy you'll pay for Obama's Library.

The Obama comment was funny, but she is 91, time to stop poking the bear. Congraats on 5 years. We started around the same time, hard to figure who is the biggest windbag...anyway, i always enjoy your stuff! Get the dog, imagine how much material a dog will give for your posts.

Happy anniversary!! Are you going to change your name to the Svelte Speaker?
By: fishducky on August 3, 2016
You have a lot to be thankful for... but you might have to pay for sassing your mother. I never figured you to be at a loss for words. Here's to another 800 posts! Cheers

Congratulations on hitting 800 posts, and for hanging in there for five years! It's a shame how many former bloggers have moved on, but I hope you continue to hang around for at least another five years and 800 posts.

It is almost as if we are on each other's Christmas list. I will write even though I am sure I repeat myself every year or so!
By: Tabor on August 3, 2016
Happy Blogiversay! I haven't had one consistent blog for five years.
By: Patrick Dilloway on August 3, 2016
I adore your response to your mother. I'm surprised that I've been blogging for six and a half years. It's brought me an editing career. Isn't it great that blogs unite people all over the world? Love, Janie

Congrats Big Time on your blogaversary. Time flies when you are having fun. I know I have enjoyed your art, humor, learning about your family and travels. I know what you mean about losing some of the people we follow. I always hope they just ran out of topics. Enjoy your caviar and vodka and can't wait to see what pet you bring home.
By: Arkansas Patti on August 3, 2016
Congratulations on five years. Not only do you find topics but they are very interesting. You have a great way of telling a story and you include lots of humor!

Congratulations on five years of blogging and 800 posts! Your updates in the "Christmas letter" were fun to read - it's always interesting to find out a little more about the person behind the computer screen. Sometimes it feels like I know you and your family. Oh heck, I *do* know you and your family! Best to all of you.

Congrats on your milestone! The fifth year anniversary gift is wood. I'll leave it at that. Yes, I will. I am NOT going to tell you that I hope you get wood for an anniversary gift. Whoopsie! My 13-year-old-self has quite an inappropriate sense of humor.

Five years is quite an accomplishment. Most people blog for a while and then let it fall by the wayside. But your work is consistent. I always enjoy your posts. Keep up the good work...and the comment to your mother sounded like something I would have said:)
By: Rick Watson on August 3, 2016
I love your blog Stephen as you know and even though I don't always leave a comment I don't miss many posts. Big congratulations on a lovely and often moving blog. I'm glad your mum is doing well and CJ too. Cheers from beautiful bali.

Stephen, Your postings are a delight and I look forward to them. Congratulation on the milestone. As for retirement, it is a wonderful thing and I recommend it highly. All the best to you and Mrs. C.

I get hundreds of hits each day from Russia and have done for years, don't worry, I'm not sure why, but I'm assuming they aren't from people. Glad to hear that your son has completely recovered! I've been blogging for 9 years on blogger and for a couple of years before that somewhere else. Wow, how time flies when you are having fun. Happy blog anniversary!
By: LL Cool Joe on August 4, 2016
I'm on my 8th year which really boggles my mind. I consider myself semi-retired. I don't go looking for work but still send out proposals when requested.
By: Ellen Abbott on August 4, 2016
Wow, 5 years! Doesn't time zoom by us when we're enjoying ourselves. And terrific to hear that all is well with your family. Particularly pleasing to hear that CJ has made a full recovery and has found love. And as for your mother, I feel I know her very well despite never having met the lady. I'll have a drink tonight to toast the 5 years gone and the (hopefully) many more to come. Cheers. PS I too have been inundated with hits from Russia - I've not got a clue what's going on.
By: Bryan Jones on August 4, 2016
Happy blogaversary! I'm glad you're still around!
By: The Bug on August 4, 2016
Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary and your retirement. I don't talk politics with my parents, either, but I have rolled my eyes when I see Christmas Cards from members of the Bush family. I, too, tend to have a lot of hits from Russia and have wondered about it.
